Getting Started

I was born in Emporia Kansas but as an Air Force brat I had
been moved from one place to another until age 17. As my
father used to put it, "I've been all over the world and part of
Arkansas". Spending my younger years in England and then
Tacoma Washington, I was fortunate to see the differences in
cultures and also some of the most beautiful and varied scenery
in the world.
 I remember at
age seven being given an art book, a bunch of
paper and a pencil with the eraser taken off. My parents had
seen my interest in drawing and decided to help encourage me.
I guess the pencil with no eraser  idea came from someone else
who was into art.
"A true artist does not use an eraser." I
was told. The art
book was quite good showing the human
forms and how they were constructed and how they related to
each other. I drew thousands of hands, eyes, feet and
everything else on the human body.

Practice makes perfect

Through the years I've experimented with many types of media
including watercolor and India ink which was my favorite for
several years. I had dabbled in oil paints but used to get
frustrated when the colors would get "muddied up". It wasn't
until I happen to watch Bob Rossi on TV teaching painting
techniques that I began to understand what I was doing
wrong. With more practice and a lot of research it all started to
come together.
While most of my paintings in the past were strictly
landscapes and seascapes dealing with trees, water and
mountains, I've recently decided to take on the more exacting
subject of the human form. After all, that's were I first started.
Working with oils has now become like magic. I get a lot of
satisfaction in understanding just how to get the effects I want.
With the right mix of colors, the right brush and the right
technique, things just magically appear on the canvas.
Other than Art

Of course like most anyone else, I've had to work all of my
life and I took up the profession of building houses. While
being moderately successful at it, it has never given me the
satisfaction that I get from painting.
I also have a tremendous appetite for a multitude of hobbies
and interests. Sports has been extremely important to me and
I've played almost everything. Tennis, baseball, softball,
soccer, bowling and even coaching.   I also have a massive
craving for knowledge, especially in science both of the past
and the future.  In my spare time, I even took flying lessons,
got my pilots license and then built my own airplane.

Finally

I love painting especially in oils. I love it when the paint does
what I want it to do. Every painting is a personal experience and
becomes a part of me. I hope to leave parts of me all over for
others to see long after I'm gone.
