20 months old and already bitten by the bug
Skylar Thompson learned to say "airplane" before
he learned to say momma. Also known as "Squishy"
he has been awestruck since the first day he saw
an airplane takeoff and fly up in the sky at Pell City.
At only 16 months he
sat in the front seat of
Lynn Glenn's Breezy
holding the yoke and
said "bye Pawpaw" -- "up!!!"
He had decided he was
going flying.
Just recently Ron Gilmer
offered Skylar a ride in his
Cessna 172. Our concerns that he might be a little
scared of actually flying were quickly eased when
he broke out in a huge grin as we taxied to the
runway. Once we lifted off his grin even got bigger.
He absolutely loved it. We flew around the river
where he saw boats in the water, the houses and
trees way down below. He got to see the world in a
whole new perspective.
Now he's hooked and Ron has a lifetime buddy.
This is what it's all about.
Whether a person is 20 months
old, 20 years or 90, the little kid
in all of us is still awestruck at
the idea of defying gravity and
taking to the skies. I think it's
wonderful that so many of our
EAA members enjoy sharing
their flying experience with those who have only
dreamed of flying.

Tribute to Neil Gifford We lost a friend but his memory will be with us forever. Neil lost his battle with cancer but he defied the odds for nearly four years. I like to think that his love of aviation and the love of his friends at the St. Clair County Airport not only kept him going the past four years but made his final days much more bearable. EAA 1320
